Belém is a Brazilian city, Pará state capital, belonging to the Metropolitan mesoregion of Belem and
the micro­region of Belem. With an area of ​​064,918 km2 1, located in northern Brazil, far 2140
kilometers from Brasilia.
In its nearly 400 years of history, Belem experienced moments of fulfillment, including the golden age
of rubber, in the early twentieth century, when the city received many European families, who greatly
influenced the architecture of local buildings, becoming known at the time as Paris N’América. Today,
despite being cosmopolitan and modern in many ways, Belém did not lose the traditional feel of the
facades of houses, churches and chapels of the colonial period.
The region where today is the city of Belem was in the mid­eighteenth century, a small village which

The establishment of the original core of the city dates back to the context of the achievement of the
mouth of the Amazon River at the time of the Philippine Dynasty by Portuguese and Spanish forces
under the command of capitan Francisco Caldeira Castelo Branco, that the January 12, 1616,
founded the Forte do Presepio. The village that was formed around was initially called “Happy
Lusitania”. Later it was successively named as: Santa Maria of Grantham; Santa Maria de Belém do

During the rubber boom, Belem was considered one of the most developed cities in Brazil and one of

Chinese, French, Japanese, Spanish and other smaller groups in order to develop agriculture in the
lands of Bragantina Zone.

more reserved in areas far from urban centers, living their own culture, having faced the settlers in
many conflicts.

Occupying an area of 1065 km2, Belém currently has 1,432,844 inhabitants and is the second most
populous city in the Amazon. It is limited to the municipality of Ananindeua.
Created by federal law in 1973 amended in 1995, 2010 and 2011, the metropolitan area of ​​Belém

The belenense economy is based primarily on the activities of trade, services and tourism, although it
is also developed industrial activity with many food industries, naval, metallurgical, fishing, chemical
