The city of Imperatriz started being designed in the late sixteenth century and early seventeenth century, with
the initiative of the pioneers, who came from São Paulo, seeking for richness, the unknown and the adventure.
The city has been named after the Empress Tereza Cristina.
By the year 1958, when the construction of the highway Brasilia Belem started, the city of Imperatriz and its
headquarters remained geographically and politically distant from the city of Sao Luiz, resulting in a slow
economic and population growth. Since 1960, however, Imperatriz experienced fast growth spurt and, in the
70s, was considered the most progressive city in the country, receiving migratory contingents from all sources.
Today, by virtue of their performance in the sectors of agriculture, livestock, vegetable extraction, trade,
industry and services, Imperatriz ranks as the second largest economic center, political, cultural and population
of the state and the head of the region that binds the Southwest Maranhao, northern Tocantins and southern
Para.

cultural of Maranhão. It as a useful strategic position not only in the state but also in the whole north side. The
city has character and worthy size of a regional center, despite of having few large, wide boulevards.
Imperatriz experienced a “boom” of development in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s (as stated above), and major
attraction pole of jobs. It has become known nationally and internationally as an important center of production
and dissemination of scientific knowledge, one of the reasons is the UFMA (Federal University of Maranhão)
and the Federal Institute of Education Science and Technology of Maranhão (IFMA) .This has made the city an
alternative to investments in the country.
One of the most modern Water Parks in the state of Maranhao is in Imperatriz; the Freitas Waterpark located
at the BR010 banks near the exhibition park with nearly five years of foundation and a varied public, with more
than 30,000 members. There are also several Inns on the banks of the Tocantins River, and several
recreational clubs. In the summer period, the beaches on the Tocantins River come out, with a cleaning
security (land and water), lighting, stage and sand courts structure. In southern Maranhão and near Imperatriz,
