The municipality of Montes Claros is located in the Serra do Espinhaço, in the Upper Middle Sao
Francisco. The weather is hot and dry tropical, with average annual temperature of 75F. It is among
the five largest cities in the state of Minas Gerais, with a population of just over 363.000 inhabitants
and the second largest road junction in the country, connecting the Midwest to the Northeast of Brazil.
Like many municipalities, Montes Claros is the result of expedition pioneers who opened ways in the
countryside in search of gold, precious stones, enslaved Indians and traded with slaves from Africa.
The economy of Montes Claros is diversified by agricultural activities, industrial and service. The main
economic source is focused on the tertiary sector, with its various segments of trade and services in
various areas, such as education and health. Then, there is the secondary sector, with large industrial

industrial district, composed of various companies.
In recent years the city has become an important university center, which attracts students from
around the country.
Montes Claros has several parks, among which stands out the State Park Lapa Grande, which
consist of several caves of paleontological and archaeological value. The most important ones are
the Lapa Grande, Dagua, Pintada and Pequena.
In the cultural sphere, there are many attractions. The tourists can see the Church Nossa Senhora da
Conceição and São José, the Folklore Museum, the Cultural Center Hermes de Paula and Bom
Jesus Sanctuary.
