Palmas is the capital and the largest city in the state of Tocantins. The city was founded on May 20,
1989, shortly after the creation of Tocantins by the Constitution of 1988. Prior to this date, Palmas
was initially planned by the architects Luis Fernando Teixeira Cruvinel and Walfredo Antunes de
Oliveira Filho, and from there, the City began to be built by workers who came from other parts of
Tocantins and several other states.
The municipality is also characterized by being the second capital with better quality of life of northern
Palmas growth was too big during the decade of 1990. In 1991 the city had a population of 24.261
inhabitants. In 2000, the city had grown to 130,528 inhabitants. Its urbanization has also grown in

Maurício Bentes, with the rider name of Cavaleiro Luz. It was a way to honor the march of the Coluna
Prestes through the cities of the interior of Brazil.
Palacinho: Built in 1989 and toppled in 1992, it was built with Jatoba wood. It became the city
museum where one can see pieces from that time.
Espaco Cultural: this is the home for Theatre Fernanda Monte Negro which has capacity for 500
people, Sinhozinho room, Jaime Camara Library, the Centro de criatividade and the Grande Praca.

from all over the country. In the Region of Taquaruçu, there are the:
Cachoeira do Roncador: The fall in bridal veil format impresses everyone with its height of 70 meters.
It forms a beautiful lake with about 4 meters deep, ideal for those who enjoy rappel or just admire the
scenery surrounded by greenery and silence.
Cachoeira Lajeiro: Ideal for a refreshing bath, it is smaller but ideal for bathers and admirers of
nature. It has easy access and provides breathtaking scenery.
Cachoeira do Brejo do Meio: By the middle of the marsh trail it is possible to reach this wonder of

nature around. With large volumes of water starting from the Serra da Ponta stream, the fall shows in

Cachoeira do Evilson: Surrounded by greenery and a beautiful 50 meters wall that is covered by

Cachoeira Joao Mole: For those who like climbing or mountain biking this is the place to go. The
waterfall is formed by the huge grotto Joao Mole, with small falls along the way. The waterfall forms a
natural pool 20 meters long, 20 meters wide and 80 cm deep.
Cachoeira Escorrega Macaco: To get there, you can use the same path that is used to reach the
waterfall of the Roncador. The greenery, the walls covered with ferns and bamboos give it a special
touch. The waters pass through the rocks and fall just below where it forms a huge natural pool 4
meters wide, 8meters long and 1.5 meters deep.
Cachoeira do Rapel: More than 10 km walk starting from Taquaraçu, there one can camp or just have
