The process of colonization in the region now occupied by the municipality of Patos de Minas and
neighboring districts probably began in the late 18th century, a period that precedes the discovery of
gold in the mining regions with the movement of inputs and flags toward the lands of Paracatu. The

edge of the rio Paranaiba, grew, turned camp and after vila, the devout village of Santo Antonio dos
Patos. In May 24, 1892, the president of the State of Minas Gerais raises the village to the category
of city of Patos de Minas. In 1943, the State government has changed the name to Guaratinga,

Patos de Minas, the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters, in 1970, and the consolidation of
the road network with the tarring of BRs 354 and 365, connecting the city to the capital of the State,
and to the northeast of the country. The discovery of ore body of Sedimentary phosphate, in the
locality of Rocinha, at the end of the 1970s, designed Patos de Minas nationally, causing the first visit
of the President of the Republic in the city, the General Ernesto Geisel in 1974.
The municipality is located in the Central Plateau, therefore its relief is characterized by large
extensions high and flat were punctuated by hills and valleys. The topography of the land is divided
into 5% flat area, 90% wavy and 5% of mountainous area. The highest point of Patos de Minas is
located in the Serra do Swamp, on the boundary with Coromandel. The lowest, 750 meters away, at

the highest temperatures is between September and March. On the other hand, between May and
August are recorded the lowest thermal medium.The period of highest rainfall occurs between
October and April. The winds are, in general, weak, and its greatest strength occurs in August.
The agribusiness and agroindustry are considered as major economic potential of the municipality.
The “boom” farming began in the 1970s with the Polocentro project, the Federal Government, which
saw the agricultural use of Cerrado covering the crops.
Agriculture is highly diversified with grain production and bustling. The products that stand out are
maize, rice, soybeans, beans, coffee, passion fruit, tomatoes and horticulture. The cattle have
significant economic and social importance to the municipality, with a flock of 180 thousand heads
(survey Pref. Municipal ­ year 2000). Patos is also considered national pole of swine genetics, owning
70% of national technology improvements in pigs. The business field won both status here that was
recently cover story in Exame Magazine (14 11­28­2001 ) titled “Facing in the Field” , with the rural
producer Decius Brussel. It is part of the powerful gaucho colony established in Patos de Minas, who
also installed here their seed companies.
With 442 industries and 2,108 commercial establishments, the municipality participates with 0.38% of
the ICMS inflow in the State of Minas Gerais. Adding to other revenue, occupies the 19th place in the
collection of general State. Patos de Minas is taken as a reference in the provision of services to
several municipalities Mineiro and Alto Paranaàba. In the 1980s and 1990s the growth of the
industry totaled more than 130 %.
Patos de Minas presents a great potential for the development of Tourism and Events, Business, and
the Ecotourism, offering all the necessary infrastructure to meet the needs of visitors. Account with a
modern network chain and good restaurants, including Italian food, Japanese, Chinese and Mexican,
in addition to the bars, pizzerias and fast foods. The access roads to the city are in a good state of

create a favorable environment for tourism and consolidate the vocation of the municipality for the
trade and the provision of services. With a landscape formed by gentle mountains and a typical
cerrado vegetation, Ducks still hides natural nooks conducive to the development of sports linked to
nature and rural tourism.
