Rio Branco (in English can be translated as White River) is a Brazilian municipality, capital of the state of Acre.
Located in the valley of the Acre River in northern Brazil, it is the most populous municipality in the state, with
319.825 inhabitants – almost half the state population, According to the 2011 census.
Rio Branco was one of the first settlements to Appear on the banks of the Acre River. In 1920 it became the
capital of the territory of Acre, and in 1962 the state capital. It is the administrative center for the economic and
cultural region.
Rio Branco is located at 9 ° 58 ‘ 29 “south and 67 ° 48’ 36 ” west, at an altitude of 143 meters ( 469 ft)
above sea level . The city is bisected by the Acre River, which divides it into the First and Second
Districts . The river is crossed by six bridges , the newest bridge being the Catwalk Joaquim Macedo .
This region is now known as Rio Branco County, but originated upon arrival in the Acre region , the
seringalista Neutel Maya in 1882 that, together with his family and workers, worked for the production
of rubber, and founded the first plantation on the right bank of the Acre River ( where today is located
the tree gameleira ) , there starting the construction of sheds and tents ; on land previously occupied by
indigenous tribes Aquiris , Canamaris and Maneteris – giving the name of Seringal Tour de Empresa (
where today is located the so-called Second District ) , to be seated where the river makes a bend. Then
opened another plantation on the left bank of the Acre River, which is now installed government of Acre
Palace, with the name of Seringal Company .
The Acre state capital ( Acre name comes from Aquiri , transcribed by the explorers of this word in the
region Uwakuru dialect of Ipurinã Indians) , was founded in December 28, 1882 , by Law or Provincial
Resolution No. 1 of 05 -11-1855 , is created the Rio Bonito Torres district and attached to Rio Verde .
In 1904 , after definitive annexation of Acre in Brazil , it was elevated to the category of town , making
it the seat of the High Acre department. In 1909 was renamed Penápolis ( named after the then
President Afonso Pena) and , in 1912 , Rio Branco, in honor of the Baron of Rio Branco , Brazilian foreign
minister whose diplomatic action resulted in the Treaty of Petrópolis. In 1913 it became a municipality .
In 1920 , the territory of Acre ‘s capital and in 1962 , the state capital .
Historically, the region’s economy is based on the extraction plant , especially in the exploitation of
rubber , which was responsible for the settlement of the region . Currently, wood is the main export
product of the state, which is also a major producer of brown -nut , fruit of açaí and copaiba oil .
Cassava crops , corn, rice, beans , fruit and sugarcane are the basis of agriculture. The industry
operates in the following segments : food , wood , ceramics , furniture and textiles .
The White River Palace is the seat of the Brazilian state of Acre government. It is located in the city of
Rio Branco . It was built in 1930 in neoclassical style. Other tourist spots are : Gameleira (old tree ) ,
Cathedral of Our Lady of Nazareth , Placido de Castro Square , Memorial Autonomistas , Catwalk
Joaquim Macedo , Museum of Rubber, Old Market , Maternity Park.
